Build Your Own High-end Speaker Cable: Step-by-Step Guide

This is a step-by-step walkthrough of building a speaker cable with helpful tips & tricks along the way. Using the NES-3003 MKII: Neotech Multistrand Hybrid Speaker Cable & SC-GP-1: Yarbo gold plated banana plugs.

SC-GP-1: Yarbo gold plated banana plug x 6

NES-3003 MKII: Neotech Multistrand Hybrid Speaker Cable x 4m

40115: Viablue Crimp Sleeve, 3.4mm dia. x 8

40120: Viablue Crimp Sleeve, 5.6mm dia. x 4

HTSBL6.4: Blue heatshrink 2:1, 6.4mm diameter (1m) x 1 (6cm required)

HTSC25-4: Clear heatshrink 2:1, 25.4mm diameter (0.25m) x 1 (24cm required)

HTSB19.1: Black heatshrink 2:1, 19.1mm diameter (1m) x 1 (3cm required)

PTFE silver plated copper wire 19/0.15 (1m) x 1 (50cm required)

Tools Required

  • Stanley knife
  • T6. Torx screwdriver
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Cutters
  • Soldering iron + solder
  • Tabletop vice
  • Black electrical tape (15mm width)
  • Scissors
  • Heat gun

Measurements

  • Strip back main sleeve all large ends x 4 - 14cm
  • Strip back each conductor x 16 - 1.7cm
  • Black 19.1mm heatshrink all large ends x 4 - 1.5cm length
  • 4cm from large ends - black tape + 1cm 4 conductors wrapped
  • 25.4 clear heatshrink all large ends x 4 - 7cm length

WIRING

AMP END

POSITIVE (red banana), WHITE + RED together, use  40120: Viablue Crimp Sleeve, 5.6mm dia.   

NEGATIVE (black banana), BLUE + BLACK together, use 40120: Viablue Crimp Sleeve, 5.6mm dia.

 

SPEAKER END

LOW FREQ.

POSITIVE (red banana), WHITE, use 40115: Viablue Crimp Sleeve, 3.4mm dia. - remember to mark with 1cm of HTSBL6.4: Blue heatshrink 2:1, 6.4mm diameter

NEGATIVE (black banana), BLACK, use 40115: Viablue Crimp Sleeve, 3.4mm dia. - remember to mark with 1cm of HTSBL6.4: Blue heatshrink 2:1, 6.4mm diameter

 

HIGH FREQ.

POSITIVE (red banana), RED use 40115: Viablue Crimp Sleeve, 3.4mm dia.

NEGATIVE (black banana), BLUE, use 40115: Viablue Crimp Sleeve, 3.4mm dia.
